Vesper : when the light fades and only the blade speaks. This European longsword captures the essence of 15th-century longswords – that pivotal period when the art of fencing reached its technical zenith. Forged from heat-treated 1060 steel and fitted with a hand-and-a-half grip wrapped in genuine brown leather, it embodies the perfect balance between martial power and medieval elegance .

📜 Description: The Soul of Twilight Forged in Steel

The Vesper belongs to the noble lineage of European Oakeshott XVa/XVIIIb type swords – those versatile longswords that dominated the battlefields and duels of the late Middle Ages. Its name evokes twilight , that suspended moment where shadow and light converse: exactly as this blade, with its hypnotic satin polish, converses with its deep brown leather hilt.

Unlike purely decorative swords, every inch of the Vesper is designed for real action . Fifteenth-century knights and men-at-arms demanded weapons capable of alternating between powerful cuts , piercing thrusts , and pinpoint control in bind . This sword perpetuates that tactical legacy: it doesn't decorate a wall, it lives in your hands .

The "hand-and-a-half" size : the hallmark of longswords. One hand for mobility, two hands for devastating power. This versatility forged the reputation of these weapons over three centuries of European combat.

Forging & manufacturing

1060 steel: the choice of functional excellence
Forget soft decorative steels or brittle alloys. 1060 carbon steel offers the holy grail for gunsmiths: hard enough to maintain a razor-sharp edge through repeated cuts, yet flexible enough to absorb the impacts of HEMA sparring without cracking. Professional heat hardening develops an optimal crystalline structure, while satin polishing reveals the raw beauty of the forged metal.

Intelligent blade geometry

  • 91 cm in length for maximum tactical reach
  • 4.5 cm wide at the base: stability when cutting, rigidity when thrusting
  • Gradually tapered profile towards a reinforced point (sharpened or blunt depending on the version)
  • 0.7 cm thickness : the perfect balance between lightness and structural strength
  • Diamond-shaped cross-section typical of longswords: optimal penetration, torsional rigidity

War montage, no parade
Full-length tang construction, robust pommel riveting , guard fitted to a tenth of a millimeter. Every component is assembled to last through decades of heavy use. No glue or compromises here: your life (or your HEMA performance) depended on it then. It still does.

Frame & details

27.5 cm cross guard: your first line of defense
The slightly curved straight quillons are not an aesthetic detail. In real combat or HEMA, they:

  • They protect your fingers from opponents' slips.
  • They allow for binding techniques (controlling the opponent's blade).
  • They offer attachment points for advanced techniques (Mordhau, half-sword)
  • They create an intimidating visual presence in a guard position.

22 cm hand-and-a-half grip: historical ergonomics
With a solid wood core sheathed in genuine brown leather (or high-quality imitation leather, depending on the model), this handle faithfully reproduces medieval standards. Its length allows for:

  • One-handed grip for mobility and shield work
  • Two-handed grip for devastating cuts and absolute control
  • Comfortable even with thick HEMA gloves (3-5 mm protection)
  • Natural anti-slip grip, even during prolonged exertion.

Flared pommel in polished steel: medieval science
This disc-shaped/mushroom pommel is not there by chance. The 15th-century masters of arms understood the physics of levers:

  • Dynamic counterweight that brings the balance point close to the guard
  • Concentrated mass for pommel strikes (Mordhau technique)
  • Comfortable support surface during half-sword techniques
  • Polished finish that complements the satin steel of the blade

Uses & Benefits

HEMA / controlled training : blunt version with secure tip, consistent weight and functional guard.
Tatami & lightweight bamboo cut : sharpened version, lateral stability, regular geometry & efficient tip.
Collection / Decoration : leather finishes, satin steel, authentic silhouette — ideal for medieval staging.
Direct benefits :

  • Improved hand protection thanks to the long quillons
  • balanced handling for clean movements
  • Strong visual presence for historical exhibition or cosplay
