Katana maintenance kit

In dojos and among collectors alike, maintenance is a ritual : remove the old oil, dust with an uchiko, and re-oil. This kit includes the classic tools used by iaido and kenjutsu practitioners to prevent oxidation and maintain a crisp polish.

Kit contents

• Brass mekugi-nuki : small hammer with punch for removing/installing mekugi (bamboo pegs) when dismantling the tsuka.

• Rice paper : wipe off the old oil, spread the new oil without scratching.

• Uchiko : very finely ground stone powder ( ≈ 30–35 g ) in its bundle, to clean the surface of the blade and even out the oil coating.

• Chōji oil (bottle): protects steel from rust .

• spare mekugi (bamboo).

Recommendation: always keep a spare set of mekugi ; these pegs can deform during reassembly.

How to use it (quick and safe)

1. Degrease : wipe off the used oil with rice paper.

2. To powder : lightly tap the uchiko onto the blade (from the base to the tip).

3. Wipe clean : remove powder and impurities with a clean paper towel.

4. Oiling : place a few drops of chōji oil , spread thinly with paper/soft cloth.

5. Inspection : Check the condition of the mekugi ; replace if necessary.

6. Put away : leave a very thin film of oil before putting it back in the saya.
