The Valmont is not a mere replica: it is an authentic longsword that engages in a dialogue with seven centuries of martial history. Every line of this hand-and-a-half tells the story of the medieval masters' quest for perfect balance. Hardened 1060 carbon steel , proven functional geometry, wax-finished leather—no artifice, only pure martial efficiency. Whether you practice HEMA in the fencing hall, seek a formidable cutting blade, or collect artifacts of European martial arts, the Valmont delivers: understated, balanced, and impeccably forged.
📜 Description: A Blade Forged for Action, Not Decoration
Inspired by the half- swords of the 14th-15th centuries, the Valmont is part of the tradition of versatile weapons used both on foot and in light armor.
Its name evokes consistency and mastery : a straight, reliable, unadorned blade, designed for the precise action. Similar to the Oakeshott XV/XVIII typologies, it promotes control, precise thrusting, and controlled cutting.
Artisanal Forge
At the heart of the Valmont beats a blade made of 1060 carbon steel , selected for its optimal balance between cutting hardness and impact resistance. This grade of steel, favored by contemporary blacksmiths of functional blades, undergoes a controlled heat treatment (quenching + tempering) that stabilizes its crystalline structure: hard enough to maintain a durable razor edge, yet flexible enough to withstand cutting blows and impacts against armor without cracking.
The blade geometry follows a subtle diamond profile—sharp mid-edges, tapering to a point—which optimizes both weight (1.85 kg, a historically consistent standard) and thrusting penetration. The satin polish reveals every forging line, every thickness transition, a reminder that this weapon was born of hammer and fire, not an industrial mold.
The full-length tang, extending through the handle and pommel, is riveted or screwed depending on the model, ensuring that no blow—even a violent one—can dismantle the entire assembly. This design, inherited from the finest historical swords, provides unparalleled structural strength.
Functional Frame
The cross guard spans 26-27.5 cm, a width calculated to intercept enemy cuts, protect the leading fingers in a mordhau grip, and provide leverage during close-quarters combat techniques (half-sword, ringen am schwert). Its quillons, slightly curved towards the blade, create a natural trap for enemy blades, facilitating disarms and iron grips. Forged from stainless steel to resist oxidation from sweaty hands, it retains its luster after hundreds of assaults.
The brown leather-wrapped wooden handle (23 cm grip) comfortably accommodates two adult hands, even with reinforced HEMA gloves. The leather, waxed and stitched using traditional methods, gradually molds to the shape of your palms, creating a personalized, non-slip grip, even in rain or sweat. This length allows for the full range of medieval guards: high guard (Vom Tag), low guard (Alber), side guard (Ochs), smooth transitions, and rapid rotations.
The massive, round, pear-shaped pommel is not merely an aesthetic counterweight: it shifts the center of gravity towards the grip (approximately 10-12 cm in front of the guard), making the blade extraordinarily maneuverable despite its 90.8 cm length. This design allows for instantaneous recovery after a cut, lightning-fast line changes, and even reverse strikes using the pommel itself (the famous "murder-stroke" or Mordhau technique). Its concentrated weight transforms every movement into an effective lever.
Sheath
The solid wood scabbard covered in brown leather (99 cm) is more than just protection: it's an essential piece of tactical gear. Its wood and leather construction absorbs moisture, prevents corrosion, and allows for silent drawing (crucial for stealthy approaches or duels of honor). The leather suspension straps adjust to a high belt or shoulder strap, providing an authentic medieval carry, with the blade along the left hip and the handle accessible to the right hand.
The scabbard's mouth, reinforced by a metal groove, guides the blade during quick post-combat sheathing. The metal tip protects the point and ensures maximum durability, even in rocky terrain.
Uses & Advantages: One Sword, Three Disciplines
HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts)
The blunt version is recommended for indoor training with full protective gear (helmet with face guard, heavy gloves, chest protector). The Valmont performs superbly in the drills of Liechtenauer, Fiore dei Liberi, or Joachim Meyer: its dynamic balance allows for Zornhau (wrathful cuts), Zwerchhau (crosscuts), and Schielhau (oblique cuts) with millimeter precision. Its safety tip (rounded or buttonable) allows for controlled thrusts without risk of piercing.
HEMA advantages : historically correct weight to develop authentic muscle memory, ideal grip length for all guards, tactile response faithful to manuscript sources (Fechtbücher).
Test Cup & Demonstration
A sharpened version is available for advanced practitioners of European Tameshigiri. Its straight geometry and well-distributed weight allow for clean cuts on tatami mats, water bottles, bamboo, and even pig carcasses. The 1060 steel blade, when properly maintained (oiled after use), retains its edge through dozens of cuts, requiring only periodic sharpening.
Cutting advantages : stable trajectory without deviation, sufficient weight to slice without forcing, quick recovery between multiple cuts.
Historical Collection & Reenactment
For discerning collectors and reenactors of medieval camps (LARP, historical festivals), the Valmont offers a level of visual and tactile authenticity rarely seen at this price point. Authentic materials (genuine steel, natural leather, solid wood), historically accurate proportions, and a believable patina—this sword blends seamlessly into a 14th-century encampment or on a display stand alongside plate armor.
Advantages of the collection : no plastic or anachronistic materials, noble aging of leather and steel, possible transmission over several generations with minimal maintenance.
