In Japanese weaponry, the mekugi, an essential component of the katana, serves to secure the nakago (handle) in the tsuka (handle) . A preferred choice for practitioners of iaido, kenjutsu, and HEMA/HEMA, it ensures a stable assembly.
Manufacturing & materials
- Selected bamboo , long fibers, good shear strength .
- Clean cut and smooth surface for a clean insertion.
- Rounded end : reduces the risk of crushing, facilitates disassembly.
Compatibility & Installation
- Compatible with most mekugi-ana (katana/iaitō handles).
- Usual length: ≈ 2–3 cm (to be adjusted during assembly ).
- Recommended installation: insert in the original direction , gently drive out with a pin punch .
- Do not stick : allows for periodic inspection and maintenance.
