Inspired by the raw, earthy power of black lava (Kuro Yōgan in Japanese) , this shirasaya wakizashi combines a red and black damascus blade with a black and vermilion urushi lacquer finish, creating a volcanic effect. Forged and fitted by hand, it appeals to both practitioners and collectors seeking a unique and elegant piece.

Origin & spirit
With its minimalist and refined style, the Kuro Yōgan celebrates the simplicity of its lines and the beauty of its materials. Its name evokes solidified lava , a symbol of mastery and calm after the storm—a nod to the spirit of the swordsman who tames his inner fire to reveal only the precision of his movements.
Forging & manufacturing
Folded Damascus steel blade with a red-black pattern revealed by striking and polishing. Bohi (longitudinal groove lightening the blade) for weight reduction and improved resonance. Kissaki (blade tip) carefully polished with mirror-like areas.
Frame & details
Shirasaya frame in hardwood, lacquered in black & vermilion urushi ( kawari-nuri “lava” decorative effect). Fitted brass habaki , matching saya and tsuka in the same glossy finish for a clean, workshop-inspired look.
Uses & Benefits
Balanced for iaido/kenjutsu and traditional cutting (rice straw, bamboo depending on level and protocol), while remaining a visually striking collector's item . The presence of the bohi improves handling and provides a clear sound feedback during technical cuts.
